FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

February 18, 2000

At 4:00 P.M., MSD rain gauges around Louisville and Jefferson County are reporting rainfall between 4.5 and 6 inches of rain (since 6:00 P.M. Thursday evening).

This storm system has caused all major creeks and channels to rise. Most are still holding water within their banks. However, additional rainfall during Friday evening hours could cause these channels to overflow.

MSD field crews have reported numerous areas of street flooding both in the city and the county. There have been several reports of house flooding in the following areas:

Winnrose Way (western Louisville)
Bass and Shirley Avenues (eastern Jefferson County)

MSD operations personnel have been working to keep all sanitary sewer and flood pumping stations in service. Some stations have required auxiliary pumps, but sanitary service has not been lost in any area.

MSD maintenance personnel have been operating auxiliary pumps to prevent backups in the Beechwood Village; Hikes Point; Highgate Springs; and Okolona areas. Crews have also been assigned to all major bridge and culvert crossings to remove debris.

MSD Customer Service’s Department has received over 500 service requests ranging from street and yard flooding to sewer backups.

The Ohio River continues to rise with crests of 20.0’ on the Upper Gauge and 51.0’ on the Lower Gauge predicted for Sunday, February 20th. MSD will continue to monitor river level readings over the weekend as rainfall upstream could affect river levels in the Louisville area.

At this time rain continues to fall in the Louisville metro area with additional rainfall in the forecast. All MSD forces will remain on duty to address all sanitary sewer, drainage and flood protection issues.
