The Louisville
and Jefferson County Floodplain Management Advisory Committee will
meet Monday, April 10, at the MSD Main Office Building, 700 West
Liberty Street.
The advisory committee is a group of
flood management and emergency agency representatives and local
citizens who will meet on a regular basis to identify flooding
problems, design possible solutions, and develop a long-range action
plan. Dick Bartlett, the local Emergency Management Agency Director,
will chair the committee.
The group will meet on monthly
intervals through November 2000. The goal is the development of a
master plan (Floodplain Management Plan) that will incorporate
programs and initiatives for watershed and floodplain management into
a single document.
Development of the Floodplain
Management Plan is a requirement under the Federal Emergency
Management Agency’s (FEMA) Community Rating System (CRS). The CRS
assigns points to communities that take steps to minimize the levels
of risk and damage due to flooding. By complying with CRS regulations,
communities such as Louisville and Jefferson County, can lower the
cost of annual flood insurance premiums for residents who live in
flood prone areas.
