The memories of
the Flood of 1997 are all too vivid. It was the seventh worst flood of
record in the Louisville area and over 40,000 properties were damaged.
For the past
year, the Louisville/Jefferson County Floodplain Management Plan
Advisory Committee (a group of citizens, agency representatives, and
emergency officials) have been working to develop a Local Floodplain
Management Plan. The purpose of the plan is to identify vulnerable
areas that suffer most during flooding and to develop initiatives to
reduce the impact of future floods. Public safety, property protection
and flood prevention programs are the keys to the plan.
The Local
Floodplain Management Plan is now available in draft form and is ready
for public comment. The advisory committee encourages public comment
before the plan is finalized and sent to local officials for approval.
Comments and
suggestions to the plan will be received through November 9. There are
several ways to participate.
