MSD maintains
rain gauges at most of its wastewater treatment plants and pumping
stations. The purpose is to determine the impact on those facilities
based on the variations in rainfall over a measured timeframe.
Until recently,
personnel read all MSD rain gauges on a periodic basis during and
after storm/rain events. During the past year, MSD has connected
eleven rain gauges to a telemetry system that allows real time rain
gauge readings. The connected gauges provide a geographically diverse
view of rainfall across Louisville and Jefferson County (see map).

The selected rain gauges provide rain rate updates on 5-minute
intervals and also provide cumulative totals over the duration of a
rain event. This information assists MSD in deploying personnel and
equipment during a storm or intense rain event. As a weather
forecaster, the information can be valuable in demonstrating to
viewers that rain falls at different rates and can produce different
impacts from one side of the county to another. The information should
enhance your ability to inform your viewers about trouble spots and
potential flooding in lower lying areas.
MSD is now
offering this real time rain gauge service
on the MSD website. MSD offers this service at no cost. MSD does
request that it be referenced as the source of the information when it
is used as part of broadcast weather forecast.
