RE:
NEW SURVEY MONUMENTS
The Louisville
and Jefferson County Metropolitan Sewer District (MSD) has contracted
with GRW Aerial Surveys, Inc. (Louisville and Lexington, KY) to
install and measure approximately 100 new survey control monuments
throughout Jefferson County. The project is scheduled for this summer
and will result in a countywide network of highly accurate survey
reference points. With the completion of this project, any site in
suburban Jefferson County should be no more than a mile or so from an
accurate survey control monument. Networks of survey control monuments
set by federal, state and local agencies serve as standard references
for elevations and coordinate positions required for accurate land
surveying, engineering and mapping.
Each new survey
monument will be installed by drilling an 18" x 42" deep
core hole, pouring a concrete column with a metal survey marker/disk
set at ground level. Accurate coordinates and elevations for each
monument will be determined using Global Positioning System (GPS)
survey techniques. In GPS surveys, highly accurate ground coordinates
are computed from simultaneous electronic signals received from a
number of positioning satellites in fixed orbits around the Earth.
When this project
is completed, the locations and detailed descriptions for all the
survey points will be available to the public via the Internet and the
Louisville/Jefferson County Information Consortium (LOJIC) Geographic
Information System (GIS). LOJIC, a partnership of the City of
Louisville, Jefferson County, the Property Valuation Administrator,
the Louisville Water Company and MSD, was formed in the late 1980's
for the purpose of building and maintaining a comprehensive automated
geographic information system for our community.
