MSD has
implemented a storm drain stenciling program within the Ohio River
Watershed. The purpose of the program is to increase stormwater
and environmental awareness.
Students and
teachers from Jefferson County High Schools are stenciling a fish
symbol with a "Dump No Waste" message next to storm
drains that go to the Ohio River. Some storm drains within the
Ohio River Watershed flow directly to the Ohio River, and not to a
wastewater treatment plant. Many people are unaware of this fact.
Each year, people along the Ohio River dump thousands of gallons
of used oil, antifreeze and other wastes into storm drains. The
stenciling will remind citizens to protect the river from
pollution that may kill fish.
MSD is
investing close to $70,000 for the program which includes supplies
and salaries for six students and three teachers. One teacher and
two students were selected from each high school in the Shively,
Jeffersontown and Central Louisville area. The program began
Monday, June 3 and will continue through Friday August 2. The
students and teachers will be working about 7 hours per day with
about six of those hours in the field. The remaining hour will be
used to produce maps and update MSD's database. Stenciling work is
currently underway in Western Louisville.
