Recognizing that its
workforce was becoming increasingly diverse, several years ago the
Metropolitan Sewer District began having an employee Diversity
Holiday Extravaganza. Each year, employees sponsor booths at this
event to teach their co-workers of the holiday traditions of various
cultures from around the world. The booths provide ethnic foods,
decorations, and sometimes demonstrations of various holiday
traditions. We typically have between 375 to 450 employees present
through the day. This year’s event will be held on Friday,
December 5th from 11:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. at MSD’s Central
Maintenance Facility, located at what is called “the big A”, at 3050
Commerce Center Place (off of Cane Run at Bells Lane).
Extravaganza 2003 will
feature past years’ favorites, including food, entertainment and an
opportunity to learn about the cultures of our fellow employees. In
addition, this year’s booths will be awarded ribbons in such
categories as food and visual presentation, and a grand prize trophy
for the best booth overall. Mary Woolridge, 3rd Metro District
Representative and Beverly Wheatley, Vice Chair of MSD’s Board will
be judging the booths.
An Employee Book Sale
will be held during Extravaganza to benefit local homeless children.
For weeks preceding the event, MSD employees have been encouraged to
donate up to ten books from their home for the book sale. During the
event, participants can purchase the books and proceeds will enable
children housed in local shelters the opportunity to shop for a new
book at a local book store.
The media is welcome
to sample foods from America, Jamaica, the Philippines, Italy and
more, – as well as learn about holiday celebrations and activities.
Along with food and conversation, entertainment will be provided
by local school children, the Louisville Fire and Rescue Pipe Band,
the Guru Vandana Indian Dance Company, and by MSD employees. |
