On Wednesday morning, February 26, MSD has begun erecting street closures in the floodwall at 10th Street, north of Main Street, at 27th Street near McAlpine Locks and Dam and at Riverport.
Due to recent rain and snow throughout the Upper Ohio Valley, and the prediction of continued snow, the Ohio River has been rising at a rate of .01 foot per hour since Tuesday afternoon. River elevation on the Upper Pool was projected to reach 20 feet on Thursday afternoon, but now stands at 20.5 feet at 8:00 AM Wednesday Morning. This is 8 feet above normal pool and 2.5 feet below flood stage.
MSD has also activated flood pumping stations at Buchanon (Butchertown), Western (Shawnee Park), Lower Mill Creek , and will activate the pumping station at Upper Mill Creek (Southwestern Louisville) on Wednesday afternoon.
The closures at 10th Street, 27th Street, and Riverport are the lowest in elevation in relation to the river. This operation is precautionary, but necessary given current weather conditions and rapid rise in river elevations.
MSD will continue to monitor weather forecasts, river elevations, and conditions along inland streams, such as Beargrass and Pond Creeks. Additional information will be forthcoming, as conditions change.
