September 22, 2008 Board Meeting Summary

Mr. Schardein opened his comments by reporting on the results of MSD’s response to the windstorm of September 14, 2008. Mr. Schardein commended MSD union and nonunion staff for their efforts and the services provided during the event.

Mr. Schardein gave the following report to the Board:

MSD kept 200 pumping stations working on emergency generators and tanker hauling this past week, work that was accomplished due to the cooperation of employees working 12 hr. shifts/24 hour days. Out of 234,000 customers, only 13 sewer backups were reported during that period, which is an incredible result. MSD hauled over 1,000,000 gallons of wastewater from disabled pumping stations to treatment plants. Only 150,000 gallons of sewage discharged from pumping stations, results that impress even EPA. MSD lent trucks and personnel to the Metro Works team to help clear and haul debris from properties.

Mr. Schardein noted that this was a commendable effort achieved as a union/management team, and recognized the following individuals: Dennis Thomasson, Saeed Assef, Tom Middeler, Loyiso Meliszwe, Rick Watkins, Mike Griffith, and Mac Reed. Mr. Schardein also thanked HR for providing additional human services from Tony Glore, Dave Roth, and Glenn Eilers.
