February 23, 2009 Board Meeting Summary

Mr. Schardein reported on MSD’s response to the ice storm of January 2009. A number of homes lost power and over 100 sanitary pumping stations were without primary power. Metro Ops, under the direction of Dennis Thomasson, along with support of Engineering and Infrastructure went to work with snow plows along with Metro Public Works. Our Customer Relations Department, in conjunction with MetroCall, worked to assist and direct customers. In spite of the debilitating circumstances, MSD kept routes clear of snow and ice. Metro Ops set up portable generators while MSD employees from various departments monitored pumping stations to ensure fuel tanks were functioning properly. Mr. Schardein credited all MSD staff for their role during the relief efforts. The result, out of 240,000 customers serviced by MSD, only seven individual sewer backups was reported during the ice storm.

Mr. Schardein recognized Mr. Assef who was elected President of the Instrumentation Testing Association (ITA). ITA is a non-profit technical and educational association dedicated to promoting reliability and performance of environmental instrumentation and automation technologies.

Mr. Schardein advised the Board that with MSD’s move toward envisioning its treatment plants as water quality treatment centers, he asked Mr. Trumbo, MSD’s Engineer Technician to draft a new logo that depicts what MSD means to the community. Mr. Trumbo and Mr. Green unveiled the proposed logo change to the Board.
