May 26, 2009 Board Meeting Summary

Mr. Schardein noted that one item not on the Calendar of Events is the X-Stream Clean-up scheduled for Saturday, May 30th from 9AM to 12 noon. MSD, in conjunction with the Living Lands & Waters, hosts this annual event. Mr. Schardein encouraged Board members as well as staff to come out and participate in this effort to keep our environment clean.

Mr. Schardein referenced the recent controversy between MSD’s current healthcare provider, Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield and Norton Hospital and Healthcare facilities. This dispute has led MSD to make a sudden change to the May 11, 2009, Board action that approved Anthem as the medical carrier. The revised Board action will be presented later in the meeting. Mr. Schardein commended Jerry Ferguson and Saundra Gibson for the tireless efforts in working to negotiate a medical contract with another carrier that closely matches what the Board approved on May 11th.

Mr. Schardein commended directors and managers for their continued efforts to keep costs down. The preliminary rate resolution will be presented to the Board later in the meeting and Mr. Schardein made it clear that every step has been taken to keep the increase at the lowest possible margin. Some cuts he has made include: cutbacks on travel, executive incomes decreased by 10% and frozen salaries for employees with the exception of those obligations under union contract. With these measures in place, Mr. Schardein expressed is confidence in defending the proposed rate increase.
