November 23, 2009 Board Meeting Summary

Mr. Schardein gave an update on the spill that resulted from a broken diversion structure at Morris Forman Water Quality Treatment Center that dumped 10 million gallons of sewage into the Ohio River. Under the circumstances, Mr. Schardein stated the problem was remedied as quickly as possible and area residents as well as EPA were notified.

Mr. Schardein followed up on an email to the Board regarding ground water that residents are complaining about in Beechwood Village. Mr. Scharedein advised that all neighborhoods will see construction projects to upgrade the sewer system to tighten and prevent ground water from entering the sewer system per the Consent Decree. Mr. Schardein advised that residents in the Beechwood Village area were notified prior to construction of the changes resulting from the construction upgrade.

Mr. Schardein announced that MSD received an award from U.S. Department of Homeland Security. Specifically, Pat Fitzgerald and Gerard Kohler worked with technicians to train them on how to identify terrorist attacks related to spills or damage to the infrastructure. Mr. Schardein commended them for their work in this effort.
