The Cedar Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant located in Jefferson County is a 2.5 million gallons per day design facility. The wastewater treatment plant was constructed in 1995 to provide sanitary sewer service to the Cedar Creek Watershed and a small portion of Floyd's Fork Watershed. The new wastewater treatment plant eliminated existing neighborhood package plants which had a history of operational problems. The construction of the Cedar Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant has greatly improved the water quality in the area. The Cedar Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant is designed to receive an average daily flow of 2.5 million gallons per day and a peak hydraulic rate of 9.4 million gallons per day. Plant facilities include raw sewage pumping, a manually cleaned coarse bar screen, two mechanically cleaned bar screens, grit removal basin and grit separator, concentric channel oxidation ditch, two circular final clarifiers, traveling bridge sand filters, ultraviolet light disinfection, post aeration, return/waste sludge pumping, and aerobic sludge holding basin. Processing of waste sludge is completed at an existing MSD facility, the Morris Forman Wastewater Treatment Plant. The final treated effluent flows from post aeration into Cedar Creek which flows into Floyd's Fork and the Salt River. The Cedar Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant is currently operating near its rated hydraulic capacity. Therefore MSD has evaluated the current and future service area in the 1999 Cedar Creek Action Plan Update. In order to address the 20 year planning area needs of Southeast Jefferson County, MSD is moving forward on an expansion of the Cedar Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant. The 1999 Cedar Creek Action Plan Update has been approved by the Kentucky Division of Water which recommended the expansion of the plant.
