Morris Forman Wastewater Treatment Plant
Community Odor Survey Project
(WEA Project #266-04)

Verbal Description

Survey #11 - Post  Zimpro shutdown

The community odor survey was conducted in the early afternoon of Tuesday, February 19, 2002. It was an overcast day with moderate, steady winds at 2-4 mph generally out of the south or south southeast. The temperature was about 50°F. On this day, the Jerome hydrogen sulfide analyzer was not functioning properly.

For the five (5) ambient sampling locations (#1-#5) in the neighborhoods north and northeast of the treatment plant, along the Dumesnil St. corridor, the odor intensities were very faint to faint. A noticeable industrial chemical odor was detected at stations #1 and 2 which was directly downwind of industries on Bell's Lane today. There was also a sweet, bakery type odor detectable at stations #3-5.

Very faint to faint odors were detected at the three (3) sampling stations (#6-#8) in the neighborhoods east and southeast of the plant. No MFWTP odors were detected but a slight soapy odor was detected at station #7, and the bakery odor was sensed again at station #8.

For the three (3) sampling stations (#9-#11) located south and southwest of the treatment plant in the more industrial areas of the City, the industrial chemical odor levels were very faint at stations #9 and #11 and a very strong industrial chemical odor was detected at station #10.

At the MFWTP, there were moderate winds at 2-4 mph generally out of the south or southeast. The odor intensity at the seven (7) sampling stations around the plant ranged from faint to noticeable. At locations #17 and #18 an off site industrial chemical odor was detected, which is downwind of the Bell's Lane industry and upwind of the MFWTP. At other locations, there were sludge odors or activated sludge odors, while at station #15, there was the same chemical odor prevalent at the other community locations but not from MFWTP. Both biotowers were in service and both scrubbers were in operation. The new stationary incinerator (PTO) appeared to be operating normally. Zimpro was out of service. The plant is currently dewatering sludge, mixing it with sawdust if necessary and hauling to the landfill. The new dryers and RTO's are not in service yet.

Odor surveys will be conducted an average of once every two weeks during this project and will be conducted through August, 2002.
