MORRIS FORMAN WASTEWATER TREATMENT PLANT

COMMUNITY ODOR SURVEY PROJECT

VERBAL DESCRIPTION

Week #35-Survey A

The community odor survey was conducted in the early afternoon of Wednesday, November 24, 1999. It was a partly cloudy day with strong winds generally out of the northwest and ranging from 1-5 miles per hour. The temperature was about 53°F.

For the five (5) ambient sampling locations (#1-#5) in the neighborhoods north and northeast of the treatment plant, along the Dumesnil St. corridor, the odor intensity ranged from non- detectable to very faint and the hydrogen sulfide (H2S) concentrations ranged from 1 to 3 parts per billion (ppb). No MFWTP or industrial odors were detected at these stations today. Monitoring station #5 was relocated at the intersection of Colmar Drive and Rosewell Avenue.

Very faint to noticeable odors were recorded at the three (3) sampling stations (#6-#8) in the neighborhoods east and southeast of the plant and the H2S levels ranged from 2-4 ppb. Monitoring station #6 (relocated from Stratton Avenue to the intersection of Southern Avenue and Hazel Street) had a noticeable raw sewage odor. The odor was coming from one or more of several catch basins in this area.

For the three (3) sampling stations (#9-#11) located south and southwest of the treatment plant in the more industrial areas of the City, the odor intensity was non-detectable to very faint. The H2S concentration was generally 2-7 ppb. A very faint industrial odor was detected at station #11, but no odor was detected at stations #9 or #10.

At the MFWTP the wind was generally out of the north northwest. The odor intensity at the seven (7) sampling stations around the plant ranged from non-detectable to strong. H2S concentrations at these stations were in the range of 3-6 ppb. Zimpro odor was not detected at any station on this day, but a noticeable to strong sludge odor was detected at stations #14, #15 and #16. Three Zimpro units were on-line. The biotowers were recirculating water. MSD has stopped feeding primary effluent to the towers. All biotower ventilation fans were running.
