Components of a
Wastewater Collection System (cont.)
MANHOLES are built
with lateral, branch, main, trunk, and inteceptor sewer lines for the
purpose of allowing access to the sewer lines by people and equipment for
maintenance and repair functions. They are the round metal lids that you
see mostly in streets. They are not just used for access to sewers but
also for acess to water, electric,
telephone, and natural gas facilities. Generally the function of the
manhole or the agency it belongs to is cast into the lid. You should never
remove a manhole lid of any kind for any reason.
Manholes in straight run sewer lines are generally not placed any further
apart than the distance that can be cleaned by the appropriate type of
equipment, this distance is generally 300 to 500 feet. Manholes are also
placed at any change in sewer line direction, sewer line slope, sewer line
elevation, pipe sizes, and sewer junctions.
